film noir at home

For my morning sketch, I thought I'd try something in this genre since I've never done it before, and it made me laugh at my ineptitude. It was fun, but I'm fully aware I'd have to do a lot more practice before I ever do any sort of commission in this style!
Lots to do today. Sitting at my desk in the middle of a crime scene yesterday really distracted me, so I must buckle down and get through a big ol' pile of work. The police are still messing about, but at least my front door's not taped off any more.

Camberwell art college is opening their MA degree show tonight, 6-9pm, so if you're there, you'll undoubtedly find me nosing around the illustrators' area.

Yes! I love those. And the doctor/nurse one where the nurse ends up kicking the doctor.

Thanks! It's only recently hanging out with some old-school comics guys that I feel very small, when they clean up their artwork at, like, 2 billion dpi. And they get a bit sniffy (in a friendly way, thankfully) about my slap-dash minis.
That's not even starting on the font/designer guys, they're so picky I wonder how they get any work out at all!

Don't let those picky artists get to you. I agree with Raina, this is a success. But why the cactus?

Ha ha, why not? I guess it just seemed appropriately sinister. It would have been more true to life if I'd made it a freaky spider plant.

Haha! I remember learning about how to do comics and following instructions to clean up artwork at around 2 billion dpi and just thinking "how the hell am I going to manage that? I'd like to, but my computer can't take this!", it can barely even handle it now. Sometimes I feel silly for still doing things my slapdash way to be quicker as opposed to the "proper" way.

This picture is ace, btw. I think you really nailed the style, all the shapes look really solid and there's a good sense of depth!

Thanks! Yeah, sometimes I think quantity is preferable to quality, particularly if quality means I just never do it.
