arundel castle

One last day of sightseeing with my parents, this time to one of England's finest castles, in West Sussex.

Some interesting silhouettes in the garden by Philip Jackson:

Some tall stairs and an amazing old cork tree:

We walked back along the Arun river to Amberley train station and got back just before dark. Which involved trespassing on a closed footpath and making an Indiana Jones-style crossing on the iron struts of a hugely mangled footbridge.

The solid door on this rickety little dock struck me as a bit surreal.

My dad said, 'You're not going to get a good photo with only this much light', and he was right. But he also said, 'That's a very English looking cloud', so I am posting it because it's kind of interesting in its cloudy Englishness.

How can a cloud be English?

Hmm, I'm not sure. I was pretty tired when I posted that. But that cloud is sort of puffy and stretched out at the same time, not the kind of clouds we get in the Seattle area, where I lived when I was little. We occasionally get a puffy cloud hunkering down on top of Mt Rainier, but it's mostly solid cloud cover, the kind that allows vampires to mingle freely among us.

When you were at Arundel, did you see the Boss?

No, I think the Boss must've been keeping a low profile. But my mum caught two burglars and stopped a carjacking, so he would've been proud.

Such a cool castle! My parents were just visiting too and I saw my share of castles in France and Germany.

Hi, Lenore! That's great, castles never get boring! :-) How are you and Daniel doing?

Only yesterday I was admiring that castle from the train window...

I once went for a job doing design and layout for porn magazines in Arundel. I didn't take it in the end as my mum didn't want me to. Fair enough, I guess.

That's funny, you'd never think of porn magazines while walking through the village. Where were you going on the train? I love being able to see the castle come up on the horizon when the train draws up toward Arundel. It looks even better if you walk there along the river from Amberley, but we had to do the walk in reverse (Arundel back to Amberley) because we forgot to check if the train stopped at Amberley, oops. There's a little working museum in Amberley that I keep meaning to visit, but I haven't managed it yet. The pub there, the Bridge, does the best chips anywhere.

We were going to London, Claridges for a wedding. What should have been an hours journey, due to engineering works, detoured round all of Sussex and took two and a half hours.

Amberley? not sure if I know it...
