Pushkin House ....

English speakers: Did you know that LiveJournal has a massive Russian-speaking artistic community? I'm really hoping we'll get some good recommendations on comics and illustration from their part of the world. (I finished the post in handwriting because I'm rubbish at typing in Cyrillic.)

Мои любымие художники на ЖЖ/ my favourites so far on LiveJournal (otherwise known by its initials 'zhe-zhe' in Russian):
siniy_chelovek, hotshkin, rusolga, shendrik, ilyaz
Another favourite, who's Russian but now lives in the States/ Он русскии а живет в США: Vladimir Zimakov

You can find a good range of illustration from Russian speakers on this self-portrait website, selfportraits.ru.

Some of my favourite Russian artists from history:
Viktor Vasnetsov
Ivan Bilibin
Mikhail Vrubel
Lev Bakst
Mikhail Nesterov
Vasily Surikov
Valentin Serov
Aristarkh Lentulov
Vasily Kandinsky
Karl Brullov
Andrei Rublev
Arkhip Kuindzhi
Ilya Repin
Natalia Goncharova
Vladimir Tatlin
Olga Rozanova
Vladimir Lebedev
Varvara Stepanova
Alexander Rodchenko

Edit: Have a look at some of these artists people have recommended! Great stuff. :-)

I love your artwork today! LJ is *huge* here.
I'll have to check out Lentulov and a couple of others on your list that are new to me. Yay - field trips to art museums!

Cool! My favourite museums are:
the Russian State Museum in St Petersburg
http://www.rusmuseum.ru/eng/home/

the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow:
http://www.tretyakovgallery.ru

the Vasnetsov House Museum (metro: Rizhskaya)
http://www.visitorline.com/address/1123/

Mayakovsky Museum (metro: Lyubyanka)
http://www.museum.ru/majakovskiy/expos1e.htm

Abramtsevo artist colony (near Sergiyev Posad)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abramtsevo

the Polenov House Museum (in Polenovo on the Oka river)
http://www.museum.ru/museum/Polenovo/maine.htm

Have you discovered any of those fascinating small, tucked-away museums? There are some obscure ones I missed while I was in Moscow, like the Lamplighters Museum, and I always wonder about them. And once a Russian artist had me model my left ear for him to add to his studio collection of several hundred paintings of women's left ears, and I can't remember his name so I can't look him up to see if he's still painting ears.

My favourite small tucked away museum is the Pitt Rivers in Oxford. It's just crammed with all these cases containing all manner of tribal paraphernalia (collected, no doubt, by entirely honorable and honest means) -- shrunken heads, magic charms, poison darts, etc., all just jammed in together with little coherence of flow. And all the drawers under the cases have stuff in them too, and everything has a tiny little hand-inked label tied to it, explaining what the thing is and where it came from. Basically, it's the museum I picture Indiana Jones's finds ending up in.

I lived in St. Petersburg for a couple of months, and went to the Russian State Museum, Hermitage, etc.

(I am in awe of your pink матриошки, by the way.)

Oh, thanks, I keep meaning to visit the Pitt Rivers museum, but I haven't made it there yet! I resolve to do that on my next Oxford visit!

That's cool you studied Russian, too! :-D

Do let me know, I'd be so curious! I met him through a colleague at Shakespeare & Co bookshop. (Working there was the best job ever, but I had to give it up pretty quickly because I couldn't pay the rent on it.)

Спасибо =)

I'm amazed at your russian-speaking skills ! I can barely decipher the cyrillic alphabet and speak a word or two... (I've studied it for one year in high school)

Didn't you recently say "No one speaks languages as poorly as the Brits except maybe the Americans and I have a foot in both those camps" ?

Aw, thanks. My Russian's very rusty, and the written side of it's never been that amazing. At least, not as good as it should be, considering I did my university degree in Russian. I was very excited when I found out how many Russians are on LiveJournal, but I haven't followed them up as much as I would have liked. It's mostly because of that weird internet thing where, even in English, it's easy to say things that people take the wrong way. And it's even harder in a second language to gauge the nuances of what I'm saying. That's why I'm so impressed with your English, you seem to have a perfect grasp on all the language's subtleties. ...I try to deal with accidents in Russian by tagging on lots of smiley faces at the end of the comments, so at last they they know I mean well!

Your russian is amazing!!

A few years ago the National Gallery held a Russian Landscape exhibition, which was possibly the greatest exhibition I'd ever seen. The later works by these folk were truly awe inspiring, Isaak Levitan, Ivan Shishkin, Arkhip Kuindzhi.

I really think 19th century Russian art so often gets overlooked!

I agree, I'm totally staggered by the work that came out of that period! Shishkin... hehe, Russian kiddies love his work because one of his most famous paintings of bears in a forest was put on the front of a chocolate wrapper. So they see Shishkin and think 'chocolate'. :-D

I hadn't even considered that other countries would have their own version of the 'chocolate box lid' picture. That's brilliant. We get a soppy dog or an orphan, and russians get a bear! That's much cooler.

I've been round the UK small press quite a while, but family life takes up more of my time nowdays... I was at caption this year (breifly) - them were probably my kids running about on the Saturday afternoon

Oh - oh no, I was not especially conversant or outgoing at Caption this year - with the kids there I had to have my eye's & ears out for what they were doing.

I had hoped things would be a buit different as to how they turned out, but I realised it was a foolish hope.

Still - I did get a few moments to sit & chat with some of the people I know & rarely meet; which was nice, but on the whole the Caption thing fell a little flatter than I'd like for me.

Still we had a good family holiday in Oxford.
