dear david lasky,

After dinner last night, I decided to sit down and make a comic from start to finish, even if it turned out a little messy. I based it on the letter I wrote to remarkable Seattle comics artist dlasky, but added a few extra bits. I hadn't known what to put in my letter to him, but I realised the writing paper itself had a back story, so that's what I wrote about. I going to try to print this up as a mini comic to sell at London's Alternative Press Fair on Sunday, 1 Feb, near Euston station.

And good news! Yesterday I sent in the last of my artwork for my first UK picture book! It's published by David Fickling (who publishes the DFC) and written by Giles Andreae. More news about that later! Now I am working like a maniac on a book I am doing for Scholastic UK, also very exciting.

Edit:
PS Here is Mike's mother's blog and Mike's brother's comedy website.

It's kind of a tribute to my total obsessive nerdiness. I got SO into making that thing! :-D

I won't even go into all the ways I'm a nerd, it would be too embarrassing. ;-)

This is totally charming! And also a complete constrast to the exercise in poor taste and risque humour that I'm planning.

Goodness me, shall I have to avert my eyes?

Glad you like the comic! Are you back in the land of the living yet, after that killer project?

Picture Book
WOW!!!!!! This is so sweet! I loved receiving it as a letter, but love it even more as a comic that everyone will be able to read.

As soon as I'd read your letter, I wanted to write one back immediately, BUT I'm fighting off a nasty cold, and didn't want to send you "germy" paper. So as soon as I'm feeling back to normal, I will write.

I'm excited for your first UK picture book, and say "Hooray for David Fickling!"

Re: Picture Book
Thanks, man, keep your germs to yourself!

No, really, I hope you feel better soon. It was fun making that comic, wouldn't have done it if it hadn't been for the letter. Lots of wishes for better health being sent your way.

Oooh, I only just saw this! It's magnificent, I admire this obsessive dedication of yours! I often have ideas a little like this, but in reality I'm often much more tired :)

This reminds me of just how much I want some really lovely special letter writing pens and paper to craft people elegant letters. Which I would probably never write, but I'd like the possiblity to exist!

Thanks! And I know what you mean, I've always wanted nice writing sets, but also one of those amazing big wooden desks with a big blotter and lots of pigeon holes for the different letters!

Wonderful!
I don't know who sent me this link, but I loved it. You've found the perfect way to combine the technology of the Internet with the grand epistolary tradition. And you're a wizard cartoonist!

P.S. As a Tolkien-head myself, I would have expired with unbelieving joy had I ever received such an exquisite handmade gift as that book you did for Mike — no matter what my age

Re: Wonderful!
P.S. And the fact that my alt-comix buddy dlasky is involved (even peripherally) makes it all even cooler

Re: Wonderful!
Thanks so much, Josh! I'm new in comics and just getting to know your work, but I've really liked what I've seen so far! And it was great meeting David Lasky last time I was back in Seattle and hanging out with his Friends of the Nib group, he's a lovely guy.
