burnett down colouring book

Phew, it's hard to draw my own sister! Too much childhood baggage, heh heh. I tried again today, and while it looks a bit more like her and took a bit longer, I'm not sure it's a better drawing. Anyway, I'll offer both drawings if anyone fancies some colouring in. Feel free to make changes to them, or dazzle us with your own drawing!

You can find a lot more photos over on the Rat City Rollergirls website. Burnett Down skated her last bout this past weekend, but congratulations to her for those years of giving the people of Seattle a great show!

You can read more about the
Rat City Rollergirls on Wikipedia, with interesting tidbits such as the time Starbucks was thinking of sueing them over their logo, saying they owned all logos that featured a circle with writing in it. Gotta luv that local business, what support.

Here's a documentary, Blood on the Flat Track, which premiered at the Seattle International Film festival in 2007.

And I fell in love with a roller derby queen, a fab song by Jim Croce. (My sister used to have this record album.)

Thanks! You're right, it would make a fabulous comic! Loads of action, costumes and politics.

Uh.... Oh. Ah. "Burn it down", of course, yes, totally got it. Silly me...

Roller Derby is the weirdest thing, for me. I mean I find It even weirder, as a sport, than cricket. (and that's saying something).

There is no male version of it, is there ? It's exclusively played by women ?

Hmm, I've never heard of men doing roller derby, but you never know.

Hey! I just found this video of an old singer my sister and I both like, called Jim Croce. He does this great song, I fell in love with a roller derby queen:

Wow she's impressive!
I don't understand the sport though - is it just pushing each other over? If so, it's brilliant.

Here are the rules! But yes, it does involve a lot of pushing and shoving!

"Starbucks was thinking of sueing them over their logo, saying they owned all logos that featured a circle with writing in it"

FTW???? That's really not very clever.

@boxbrown - it's always nice to see the muppets again :)

I know, can you believe it? That's like, the most basic logo thing ever. The Chinese probably invented it, with their chop marks. Starbucks had to drop the claim after they got some better advice. Doh. You'd think they'd be trying to sponsor the derby girls, not sue them.

Roller Derby looks brilliant and totally mental. I just read the rules, and it sounds word for word like Quidditch.

Bonkers

Exactly alike! Especially the bit with the brooms. You should see my sister wield one of those, it's quite a sight.

It's very high impact! I think one of the reasons my sister is retiring is to save her knees!

I think the first one you did was best.

It's so annoying, but I think you're right. I wonder if I should try tackling it a third time, maybe in a different pose. Hmm...

It'd be nice to make a good picture, but for some reason it always seems harder to draw close relatives!

Haha, flatmate always complains about how Quidditch is a rubbish game that would never work, so first thing I did when reading the rules for roller derby was shout "THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE!!!" Wow, sounds like most excellent sport ever. I am So Impressed!
Liking both drawings! And Jim Croce, hooray... oof I am being completely overexcited this week.

Ha ha, I do with I could play Quidditch, though, just for the flying brooms. And roller derby is an excellent sport, but a bit too painful for me! I briefly thought about joining the London league, but then decided I liked having working knees too much. It makes rugby look tame.

Hey, my friend Sean (croctommy) took that first picture! I may have to try my hand at this. Here's a drawing of Grave Danger's "Edie Brickwall" that I never finished.

Oh, yay, thanks for posting!!! Hey, I remember her! She's another toughie!

There's so much great drawing potential in roller derby. I wonder if any of the rollergirls make comics.

I met an L.A. rollergirl at Stumptown this year and she had a mini-comic. I'll dig it up and post the info later. And the year previous there was an anthology of rollergirl-themed comics, which I will also have to dig up.
