the dentist and peter arno

I'm posting this link to Peter Arno because I found this book of his cartoons in Fensky's little book and coffee shop in Seldovia and I want to come back later and find out more about him.

He's done a bunch of stuff for The New Yorker and most of it isn't very politically correct, but I love his brushwork and tone, reminds me a bit of Seth and some of the things reidsrow has been getting up to these days. Well, a lot of New Yorker people, but it looks very cool.

Good luck at the dentist! I hate going and hadn't been since I'd lived in Switzerland is 5 years, but then cracked a tooth at teh start of my pregnancy and it cost me 1000 chf to get it fixed - OUCH!!!

OUCH, indeed! No, it was all fine, but he can't believe the little metal retainer behind my bottom teeth hasn't fallen out. The orthodontist said it would come out in about five years, and it's been seventeen!

I looooove Peter Arno. Apparently he drew each of his cartoons any number of times, trying to get one that was perfectly spontaneous. Plus, the cartoon on the left is actually laugh-out-loud funny. I've been meaning to get some books of his for years...
PS Wilbur, he is extremely dead - since the late 60's.

thanks ellen -- i thought he was pretty vintage -- a very famous name, and i know he's very highly thought of, but he's not a cartoonist i'm very familiar with.
i don't think his stuff looks spontaneous at all, seems to me very mannered.

Arno was a genius. He was a zen master of sexy cartooning. He lived in high style, even wrote a novel, if I remember right. My favorite cartoon of his is "Of course they float!"

Arno
Arno is awesome. YOu can't go wrong with him. I think he may have popularized (or invented) the phrase "back to the old drawing board". (But I could be wrong).

Hope the dentist went well. I've been avoiding going for a few years now. I will though. One day.
