cafe ink portrait

This morning I looked at some drawings by British artist Ronald Searle and drew this portrait of Jaine, who runs our studio cafe and is the heart of the whole building. We all think Jaine is the bee's knees.

She's coinciding the launch of her project, the Deptford Museum, with her birthday and was hoping I'd draw her portrait from this photo. (Apologies for the cigarette, any children's book people reading this, but she wanted that, and a mention that her favourite tipple is vermouth.)

Happy birthday in advance, Jaine!

Great, pen and ???. Interested to know what you used for the shading. I'd like to try this effect but I'm just a beginer and not sure of the tools!

Thanks! Just a bit of water mixed with the ink to make a wash, then applied with a brush onto the watercolour paper. :-)
