berlin+prague travel comic

monkey

I've been inspired by travel comics kept by people like Craig Thompson ('Carnet du Voyage') and Lucy Knisley ('French Milk') and decided to make a point to finish something on my five-day trip. It took me a couple days to get used to my pens (not using my usual dip pen, which I thought would be too messy). And I didn't want to spend the whole trip making the comic, so most of it is quick sketches while on the tram, bus (very bumpy!), train or waiting for Stuart to get out of the shower. So the scrappy draughtsmanship leaves lots to be desired, but I'm glad to have it as a souvenir of our trip.
(Please leave a comment, I'd love to hear which page you like best!)

I need to organise my photos, but here's a funny poster I saw in Prague. (Isn't it great?)

Jeez, Sarah, you're a force of nature. I dig the flow of your comics, and any apologetic words about the art are completely unnecessary. you rule!
You should work this up as a mini-comic....I'll take some to MoCCA! Just slap a cover on it and you're there.
Anyhow, let's email this week about lunch this week or next....talk to you soon!
Ellen

Thanks, Ellen! Yes, let's definitely find a lunch date! And I did go ahead and make it into a mini-comic, and posted the cover on this page. (But something odd seems to be happening with Photobucket, and only two of the 15 images seem to be appearing... annoying.) I'll try to get some made up for MoCCA, thanks for the offer!

Yeah, I didn't see it the first time 'round. I really, really like it!
Hey, BTW, I wanted to ask when your comics crit group meets. Now that all the wedding stuff is over, I would love to come to a meeting. Talk to you soon!

Yeah, just reloaded everything onto Flickr, maybe that'll work better...
Next crit group meeting is 24 June, 2pm (Charing Cross Road, Borders cafe). I'd need to run it by the other members, but if you're able to come, I'm pretty sure I could talk them into it!

PS But I only just made it into a minicomic, after you mentioned it! I was vaguely thinking about having it be a flip book, since I only drew the pages on the righthand side of my little college A5 sketchbook. But when I put them together as double-page spreads, they seemed to work okay. Thanks for the nudge! :-)

PS Thanks about the Lucy Knisley tipoff...I hadn't seen her stuff, she's really good!

I didn't realize when you first posted this that the comic was below the cut. I thought these were just panels from your jam maybe?

Wow! Impressive that you could draw this while on vacation! I agree with Ellen: You're a force of nature. Please draw more comics!

Bugpowder sent me, too. I love it. Travel comics usually rock, and this was a good one.

Ooh, and I'd love to see it in Germany! Let me get back to you, when I get a few production issues sorted out...

My favourite page is the the train with the interesting, food-laden neighbours. That looks like it was a nice journey.

Thanks for the input! I wasn't so keen on how I'd drawn the people in that part, but it was a cool encounter. :-)
