today's sketches

I got these great little notebooks for £1 each in a shop called Tiger, near the Discover Centre in Stratford. They're cheap versions of Moleskines, but I actually like the paper better, more like ordinary cartridge paper. It does show pen through the pages a bit, though.

Speaking of materials, Philip Reeve got an electric eraser-pen for Christmas and he's able to do all sort of things now with light trees on dark backgrounds, something that's been eluding me a bit. (I like this tree drawing in particular.) I might have to get one of those, I remember Will Kirkby (chamonkee) telling me about his electric eraser ages ago. You can see more of Philip's drawings in his Dartmoor Sketchbook and Vern, Lettuce and I make a little appearance on his year-in-pictures blog post. I think we've both had fun drawing trees, despite the chilblains and loss of fingers.

I feel like curling into a fetal position anytime anyone mentions does electric erasers - they're grand when its one person on their own but having a whole studio of animators using the things, the never ending low buzzing nearly drove me insane!

Ha ha, I can just imagine it! Maybe I'll stick to using it on my morning sketches and when no one's in the studio. That said, everyone's been very nice about putting up with my hairdryer when I'm watercolouring, and that's probably noisier.

I know those notebooks.
There's a Tiger in the shopping centre on Wandworth High Street near the college, too.
For my money, there's too much bleed-through, but they are terrific at that price, if you stick to pencil.

It's a good little shop, glad you have one nearby! I managed to do most of my Christmas shopping in ten minutes in there. Yeah, the bleed-through isn't great, but for that price, I can afford to only draw on every other sheet, or just put up with it. I draw better in cheap notebooks, expensive ones make me get way too precious.

There was one time when i found some of the little moleskines online for £3 each. I bought two, just to check if they were the real deal, and when I went back for more they'd all gone.

Who makes them? Pentalic makes pocket-size sketchbooks that sell for $7 here.
