mother's day in north america

Oh wow, you totally have to read this comic by Canadian creator Kate Beaton, about the time her mum took her to see a friend to get help with her art school portfolio. It's so real. (When you get to her blog, click on the image to read the whole comic.)

Happy Mother's Day to my own mother, who always made sure my sister and I had lots of paper and craft supplies to mess around with.

Brilliant! I love Kate Beaton!! And I can totally relate to being told that your drawing is "too cartoonish", as though that's a bad thing! *sigh*

Yeah, I remember getting annoyed when people said that about my stuff! But then when I started asking people to define what they meant by 'cartoonish', it turned out to mean something different to each person. Sometimes it was something as small as the difference between a character having just black dots for eyes, or white around their irises.

For a while it really made me think that drawing things in a 'cartoonish' style was bad and that I should try to draw things more realistic. But luckily I eventually realised that that was nonsense.
