stitching together excuses

I went to a portfolio surgery last night, where the 'surgeon' told me me work was all over the place, and I'd need to hone it down to one particular look. But the joy of being in college is that I don't have to, not JUST yet. (Well, soon...)
This picture is about getting up late for the morning commute. I got the stitching idea from my costume designer/ illustrator friend Cristina Petrucci.

Wonderful! I always have to study your work for a long time before I can appreciate just how much is going on... I really envy that!

From what I've heard, editors ALWAYS give it the spiel about honing down. Apparently the argument goes that if an artist is at all versatile, they'll inevitably screw up any project for which they're commissioned because of course they'll be incapable of producing two pieces in the same style. Which is as offensive as it is stupid. I'm so glad you don't have to worry about that yet, because I never tire of marvelling at your sheer inventiveness.

Sarah, I really love this image and the stitching really works well, you should definitely experiment more with it. I'm always checking out the Camberwell Illustrators website and it's good to see that this years recruits are making better use of it than last years!-)
Love, Cristina
