Позавчера вечером Я ездила в русскии центр в Лондоне Pushkin House ....

English speakers: Did you know that LiveJournal has a massive Russian-speaking artistic community? I'm really hoping we'll get some good recommendations on comics and illustration from their part of the world. (I finished the post in handwriting because I'm rubbish at typing in Cyrillic.)

Мои любымие художники на ЖЖ/ my favourites so far on LiveJournal (otherwise known by its initials 'zhe-zhe' in Russian):
siniy_chelovek, hotshkin, rusolga, shendrik, ilyaz
(не только русские, но люди, которые говорят по-русски.)
Another favourite, who's Russian but now lives in the States/ Он русскии а живет в США: Vladimir Zimakov

You can find a good range of illustration from Russian speakers on this self-portrait website, selfportraits.ru.

Viktor Vasnetsov
Ivan Bilibin

Lev Bakst
Mikhail Nesterov

I'm amazed at your russian-speaking skills ! I can barely decipher the cyrillic alphabet and speak a word or two... (I've studied it for one year in high school)

Didn't you recently say "No one speaks languages as poorly as the Brits except maybe the Americans and I have a foot in both those camps" ?

Aw, thanks. My Russian's very rusty, and the written side of it's never been that amazing. At least, not as good as it should be, considering I did my university degree in Russian. I was very excited when I found out how many Russians are on LiveJournal, but I haven't followed them up as much as I would have liked. It's mostly because of that weird internet thing where, even in English, it's easy to say things that people take the wrong way. And it's even harder in a second language to gauge the nuances of what I'm saying. That's why I'm so impressed with your English, you seem to have a perfect grasp on all the language's subtleties. ...I try to deal with accidents in Russian by tagging on lots of smiley faces at the end of the comments, so at last they they know I mean well!
