it's picnic time!

Hurrah, a perfect day for a comics lunch break! ellenlindner made lemon drizzle cake; Viviane Schwarz packed her super Rolls-Royce deluxe hamper (see her blog post); and Gary Northfield, Viv's friend Alexia and I brought along bits and bobs to Peckham Rye Park to make for the ultimate picnic.

Look at this hamper! Is it swish or is it swish?

I brought some treats from my favourite bakery. Yummy, yummy, yummy. The only thing missing was a bottle of wine, because we were all being very virtuous and planning to go back to work afterward. Oh, and my sculptor friend Eddie Smith and his kid stumbled upon us in the park and got very confused, seeing us all out in daylight like that.

HEY. Is that a Moomin mug in there? It's that mug with Moominmamma putting the berries in the Magician's hat, isn't it?

Oh my goodness, HOW did you manage to spot that?! You have, like, Moomin radar or something! :-D

I have a copy of that mug. I don't even use it, I treasure it so much.

I can see why, those mugs are beautiful objects to behold.

See, this is exactly the reason I want to be a professional artist.

That goes along with John Aggs not being able to say your name in a sentence without adding 'should quit the day job'. With recession an' all, it's probably not a good time to live entirely off comics, but if you diversify a bit, your storytelling and funny characters would go global!

Oh wait, you mean there's more to being a professional artist than just going for picnics? Curses!

Also, Peckham Rye? That name sounds strangely familiar - did you run into any sheep or rabbits while you were out there?

Wow! That picnic looks splendid!! The green cake in the last photo looks like a froggy... a delicious froggy, might I add.

is that green cake in the last pic meant to have a face on it or is my sleep deprived brain adding one?

Woweewow! Fast work!!! Yayy!
Yes, that's my good old Moomin Mama Mug. It kind of wanted to be in the hamper.
Mmm thank you for the cakes again, the frog was most amazing. I never knew there was such a brilliant bakery in the neighborhood...

I may not be good at much, but sniffing out good bakeries is my specialty... ;-)

That was great!

Nothing like a good picnic! NOTHING.

I got approached by an LA bakery, my new book is called 'Cupcakes of Doom!' and they were desperately hoping I had shirts that said that. Telling them 'not yet' was very hard.

Hope you had a delightful time! It looks as if you did!

Ayres
Those cakes bring back delicious memories. Thank you. I used to visit Ayres twice a week when we lived on Choumert Road; the animal fondants were a particular favourite.

Truly, it is! The only problem is that it is designed to sit in the boot of a car, so the food tins slosh sideways when you carry it like a suitcase. We almost had to process it coffin-like through Peckham, except then Viv had the idea to take out all the food and just carry the case with the implements, which worked okay. ...Well, Gary had to carry it, he might not say it was okay.

It wasn't that heavy, although my left arm is now longer than the other one...
