sobbing squirrel weirdness

I had so much to do this morning that I wasn't go to make a comic, but this thing that happened was just so bizarre that I had to do something. Does anyone know why a squirrel might cry? I wasn't close enough to see if it actually had tears, but it was making the exact sounds a child would make if it was having a sob.

For a bit of lighter surrealism, I'll post this great video, an early Jim Henson film called Time Piece. I was watching it last night and it was making me howl. Truly amazing.

Here's a link to Irish 24-hour Comics Day. I'm going to be there, I'm going to Dublin, woot!!! I'll be doing a monster making workshop for kids in conjuction with the Children's Book Festival at 5:30pm on Sat, 17 Oct, then signing Morris the Mankiest Monster books in Waterstones, Jervis Street, on Sun the 18th at 2pm. More about that soon!

Squirrel mysteries!
Like this? I think it's their angry warning call, especially if you were close enough to be in his territory. Was it a red or a grey?

Re: Squirrel mysteries!
Oh my goodness, yes, that's it! Not the short bursts of sound like the video, it was just doing lots of the longer wailing sounds. But yeah, I'm sure it's the same thing. And we have lots of cats around, maybe that was it.

Oh, it was a grey squirrel. I don't think we get red squirrels in our area, they're really rare now.

Re: Squirrel mysteries!
reds were mostly wiped out by the American greys.

Probably going through an existential crisis. Squirrels do have 'em, y'know....

We have a squirrel doing that at the moment, we call it mad squirrel! It's angry, not sad though -- acts like it's crazed on testosterone -- we don't know why but it may have something to do with being angry with cats.

Angry squirrel! It had its head down in this really tragic way as well, but I'm sure you're right, it was hanging its head in wrath, not misery. So odd, though.

Ours clings to the pebbledash, head down, to the wall on the corner of the house -- and occasionally runs up and over the roof. It's an odd thing, I should video it next time it's there

I have seen a squirrel do that too - it had climbed 3 floors up the sheer brick wall of a building, and I thought it was probably crying becuase it couldn't work out how to get down again.

Or at least that's what I do when I climb up and can't get back down.

Ha ha! I'll fetch a ladder next time I see you crying on the roof.

They're so amazing. There's one that I see almost every day on my way here to the cafe, it can jump three feet from a standing start to the base of a tree.

Yeah, imagine if we could jump the same distance, relative to our size! I always think that about cats, when they scoot up walls.

Wow - Jim Henson was so groovy! I love that he sounds like Kermit when he says help.

I used to walk through a park on my way to work but a rather aggressive grey squirrel took a disliking to me and used to shoot down his tree EVERY day and squeal at me. Eventually I found myself avoiding the tree at all costs. Yep, I was bullied by a squirrel!

Oh no, I am sorry to hear that! I wonder if your local council offer counseling for post-squirrel trauma. You never know, there might be lots of people who have gone through the same thing as you, might be worth asking.
