sally nicholls and now tom nicholls

So it's official, novelist Sally Nicholls is hitched and Tom Harris is now Tom Nicholls, good man. Here's a quick drawing I made of Sally dancing in front of the massive bonfire, and the sparklers and firework display. It was quite a sight. I'll have to make another picture sometime with the fire juggler in the background. It all fit in so wonderfully with her latest novel, Season of Secrets, featuring the Green Man and the Holly King:

The roots of this novel come from the story of the green man, who is the pagan god of summer. A friend told me this story, and I was fascinated by the idea of a person so powerful that he can create summer across a whole world, but who is also incredibly vulnerable, because in order for winter to come, he must be killed. Sally and Tom got married in the old Quaker Meeting House in the village of Osmotherley, just next to the North Yorkshire Moors. I'd never been to a Quaker wedding before, but it was remarkably free from nerves and fuss. Sally and Tom said about four lines to each other, then we all sat quietly for an hour, except for a few people standing up to say a few words. Then we played croquet, petanque and a bit of archery with drinks in a field before dinner.

Two of Sally's bridesmaids with their knitted portraits by my studio mate, head of Stitch London, Lauren O'Farrell:

Several different kinds of cake stacked up, made by different people:

Sally and Tom had their wedding in the middle of Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk. They'd done a couple days and now have a bit less than three weeks more to walk to the Lakes District. They'd usually camp, but they're staying in B&Bs, since it's their honeymoon.

Stuart and I had a lovely morning today walking through the moor. I'm off to Leicster early tomorrow morning for two days of library Summer Reading Challenge Space Hop events, but I'll try to post some hiking photos soon. Congratulations, Sally and Tom!

That photo of the two in front of the fire is like a still from a film not yet released. In fact, I'm stealing the setup for my film, "Lopez Island Wedding".

Congrats to Sally
Awwwww. It looks like a fab wedding. :)

Love your pic of Sally dancing before the flames.

Thanks for snapping a pic of the gals with their mini mes. Glad they liked them. The red coat girlie clearly has brown hair. After all that hair changing! :)

Yay, thank you!
Quaker weddings are my favourite weddings too. And the girls were all very impressed with their knitted people - I had lots of people ask where they came from, so you may get more requests.
And I love the mad dancing Sally picture - I feel very honoured to be sketched in your blog!
