robots, big hair and all that...

Hello! Still working hard on the follow-up book with Philip Reeve to Oliver and the Seawigs. Here's another peek! Drawing robots is SO MUCH FUN. I was trying to decide if I wanted to go for a sort of gritty Alien-film look to the book. But I work on Mac computers and I thought, my futuristic spacecraft would probably have more of a clean, Apple look to it. But I've recently upgraded to Maverick operating system on my computer and it's full of glitches. There might be some mavericks aboard this spaceship, too.

Other news: Oliver and the Seawigs was featured in the latest issue of The Istanbul Review. We even got our portraits drawn for the website! You can follow them on Twitter at @istanbulreview.

Here's lovely Hande Zapsu Wat, who interviewed us at last year's Edinburgh Book Festival for the article, and one of the spreads in the publication:

Speaking of Seawigs, my experiment with BIG HAIR continues, channeling my inner Iris the mermaid. I keep giving it little pats to feel just how poofy it is. I have a hat fitting today, I'll need to mash it down a bit.

I like the interior of the spaceship. Yeah, it's like a Mac version of those analog spaceships Wally Wood used to draw.

That spaceship looks fabulous! I'm liking the colour scheme! (and the mammoth!)
I seem to be the only person not getting glitches from Mavericks – my father is constantly swearing at his computer, while I don't seem to have any *new* problems (or only very minor ones), but haven't lost any of the problems I had before (like the extremely annoying random-kernel-panic-while-in-mail-(sometimes) one). I suppose I should count my blessings that the whole system didn't just stop working! I know that I should just wipe everything and start over, but the very thought fills me with horror....

Thanks, Alison! I'm not sure what's happening, but my mac's much glitchier than it used to be. Mine's always seizing up in Photoshop, and I have to click on a non-Photoshop window to unlook it. And I keep losing my apple-Z function, grr. Glad you're not having too many new problems.

I *do* have Photoshop problems galore, but they started when I upgraded to CC (at least I *think* they did. I had CC a month or two before Mavericks came along...) At first I thought it was my ancient wired keyboard (from three computers ago!) finally giving up the ghost, but switching to a new keyboard was no help. >.<

My Photoshop would always seize up in CS6, but the undo-function forgetting itself (do you find doing another brush stroke unlocks that? Of course then there's the problem of Photoshop only allowing one step back, but I set the slider on my tablet to the complicated shortcut for multiple undos) and shortcut keys not registering are new. I've spent the better part of the last two months exclusively doing linework in Photoshop, and sometimes I think if I get another sweeping brush stroke all over everything when I'm trying to rotate or move I will scream! =P

Of course, there's always the possibility that Photoshop *knows* when there are deadlines....

I think Wooden spaceships is the way to go..
Like the robots, there should be more wooden ones, like these robots and spaceships from Japan by Takeji (Take-G) Nakagawa are very cute..
