teenage portrait challenge!

I saw this challenge on davario's site, 'draw a picture of yourself in your teens'. That was fun.

Very nice! I've always enjoyed the "diagrammed figure" school of cartoon humor.

This might be too personal of a question, but did you use 'Teen Spirit' deodorant?

Well, my parents lived in the suburbs, so I was always driving over to Capitol Hill to try to be part of 'the scene', but I never really knew what the scene was. Mostly for me it just involved going on random trips to Dick's Drive-in for a 60-cent maple walnut ice cream cone and wandering around the shops on Broadway, or going to one of the Seven Gables cinemas to see a foreign film or walking up and down Alki Point and getting coffee at the Alki Bakery.

It totally killed me that I couldn't get in anywhere cool because I wasn't 21, or even 18, so the only places we could go late at night (if I broke my parents' curfew) were improv nights at Theatersports by Pike Place Market or the Underground night club in the U District. Or we could toilet paper someone's house. I played basketball and volleyball at school, so I remember a lot of late evenings spent trying to do my homework in a dark school bus on a waiting ramp at a ferry terminal because our team had just missed a ferry back home.

I left Seattle when I was 18, so I missed all the stuff for grownups.

Awww... I think you told me but I forget, when did you live in Seattle? Were you a grunge baby, too? :-)

Yeah, it was fun, but it always seemed at the time that it would be a lot more fun if I was at least 18, or that sacred age of 21!

I remember when I was 17, taking a group of German exchange students to this 18 club called The Oz, that my sister and I had managed to sneak into once before with some other girls. The Germans could hardly believe it when the doormen wouldn't let us in, and we hung around in the car park for a few minutes feeling like total losers before trying to find a coffee shop that was still open. And then we got in huge trouble with my parents for coming home late, and the most annoying thing was that it hadn't even been worth it.

Found you through davario (who I found via makani), and I have to say that your drawing is freaking gorgeous. I especially like the textures, the shading, and the facial expression.
