Recycled bowls, Seldovia, Alaska

I've been in the USA for a month visiting my family, after a way-too-long time of not seeing them, due to Covid restrictions. It was SO good to catch up! I have so many photos that I don't even know what to post, but I guess I'll start with the artwork side of things, since this is mostly an art blog. My American Auntie rescued some old wooden bowls for me to paint on my visit, and here's my great-niece-in-law displaying one of them!

Auntie got this bowl at the Seldovia dump, which is actually a very cool place. Partly because it's common to see bears there, but also because there's a sort of swap-shop off to one side, where people leave things they think other people might like. (In 2009, I got a perfectly-fitting pair of rollerblades there and made a painting about it.) This bowl was pretty rough, but my husband Stuart sanded off the varnish, I painted it, and my dad varnished it. A family effort!

This one my auntie found at a thrift store, and my dad sanded and varnished it. It's similar to a bowl I made in 2019, but that one had sort of generic Alaskan stilt houses and this new one is very much based on the row of houses where my aunt and uncle live.

And one more little bowl for my auntie, who loves dragonflies - this time in colour.

My grand-niece-in-law also painted a bowl but she asked me to draw the lines first, so here's her bowl before she got started on it with the paint. She got a little frustrated with the painting, and my aunt and I did a little more work on it after she left, and sent it to her.

I'll finish with a video of her doing ballet on the deck, she was a lot of fun to have around. (Her little brother pops up in it, which is exactly like what happens in real life.) Thanks for supplying all the bowls, Auntie!
